Chinese Language Classes Have Officially Started at the British School in Baku
The British School in Baku is proud to announce the official launch of Chinese language classes as part of our expanding language curriculum. This exciting new academic offering comes as a result of a partnership agreement signed with the Confucius Institute — a global educational organization dedicated to promoting the Chinese language and culture.
As a school committed to international education and global citizenship, we believe in preparing our students not only to succeed academically but also to navigate an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world. The addition of Mandarin Chinese to our curriculum reflects this mission and opens new horizons for our students in both linguistic and cultural understanding.
The classes are conducted three times a week and are led by native Chinese educators with professional teaching backgrounds. These teachers bring a wealth of knowledge and cultural insight, ensuring students receive authentic language instruction and a well-rounded understanding of Chinese traditions, values, and social practices.
Language learning is more than just vocabulary and grammar; it is an essential gateway to cultural exchange and global thinking. Through these classes, students will be introduced to Mandarin pronunciation (Pinyin), writing systems (Hanzi), basic conversational skills, and cultural elements such as Chinese festivals, calligraphy, and customs. Lessons are interactive, combining traditional language instruction with engaging activities such as games, songs, and multimedia resources to make learning fun and effective.
One of the key goals of the program is to cultivate international-mindedness in our students. As Mandarin Chinese continues to grow in global importance across business, technology, diplomacy, and culture, this initiative equips students with valuable skills that will serve them far into the future. Learning Mandarin provides a competitive edge in higher education and professional settings, and helps build cross-cultural awareness and respect — key attributes of responsible global citizens.
Incorporating Chinese into our curriculum also aligns with our school’s broader goal of fostering multilingualism. In addition to English as the primary language of instruction, students at BSB already have the opportunity to study languages such as German, French, Spanish, Russian, and Azerbaijani. Mandarin now adds yet another dimension to this rich linguistic environment, making BSB a truly international school.
The response from students and parents has already been overwhelmingly positive. Many have expressed excitement about the opportunity to engage with one of the world’s oldest and most influential cultures. Younger students, in particular, have shown enthusiasm for learning Chinese characters and practicing greetings in Mandarin during daily school interactions.
As we move forward, the Chinese language program will continue to evolve with the possibility of cultural events, exchange programs, and participation in regional language competitions and proficiency tests such as HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi). These opportunities will allow students to showcase their progress and gain internationally recognized certification in Chinese language proficiency.
The British School in Baku remains dedicated to providing a future-focused education that empowers students to thrive in a multicultural world. We are excited to see how this new language initiative will enrich our academic offerings and inspire students to discover new perspectives.
By learning Chinese, our students are not just acquiring a language — they are opening the door to a new world.
